How to Install a Wall Sconce

1. Start by choosing the wall sconce’s position( above an outlet) and mark the spot with a piece of painter’s tape recording. also, use a super stud finder to insure that the super studs land within the same super stud bay as the outlet. Use painter’s tape recording to mark the position of the super studs.

Note utmost being electrical boxes are nailed directly to a super stud, so insure that the proposed sconce position and outlet are on the same side of the stud. However, the light must also also be to the right of the same super stud, If the outlet is to the right of the super stud.

2. Shut off the power at the swell. Use anon-contact voltage tester to insure that the outlet itself is no longer amped . Use the screwdriver to remove the cover plate and, again, check that the wiring within the electrical box is n’t amped by probing with the non-contact voltage tester. Once verified, remove the screws holding the outlet into the electrical box and pull it out from the box.

3. Choose a position for the light switch between the sconce’s proposed position and the outlet. Place the old work electrical box face- down against the wall’s face at this position, position it, and trace around the box with a pencil. Precisely cut the box’s shape out of the drywall using the drywall saw.

4. Place the round- shaped ceiling electrical box face- down against the drywall in the position chosen for the sconce. Trace around it with a pencil and cut it out using the drywall saw.

5. With the cables inside the outlet box pushed to the side, slide the fish tape recording over from the inside of the box. Continue feeding fish tape recording up the wall until it’s visible from the hole for the sconce. Pull the fish tape recording out of the top hole.

6. Cut and remove about 6 elevation of the plastic jacket on a length of14/2 line. Attach one of the cables to the fish tape recording by bending it through the hook and belting it around itself to produce a removable knot. Fold the other two cables back flat against the remaining jacket. sluggishly feed the line down into the wall depression while also reacquiring the fish tape recording. Go sluggishly to help drywall damage. Pull the line through the outlet’s electrical box.

7. Pull roughly 8 to 10 elevation of line out from the outlet’s electrical box. Reach inside the hole for the switch and pull it out of the hole roughly 8 to 10 elevation before cutting the line in the middle of the circle. Cut the line from the spool at the top hole, leaving the end roughly 8 to 10 elevation long.

8. Working at the top hole first, push the line through the round ceiling box. also, fit the ceiling box into the hole, tensing the malleable bodies until it clamps into place.

9. Repeat the equivalent process at the hole for the switch, feeding 1 length of line via the top of the old tool box and one length of line via the bottom of the box before fitting it into the hole.

10. Remove the mounting tackle from the sconce tackle and attach it to the ceiling electrical box. Each tackle is slightly different, but utmost have a bar that spans the electrical box and holds the sconce in place.

11. At the sconce hole, remove the line’s plastic jacket. Using the line strippers, remove roughly 1 inch of each of the cables ’ sequestration. Twist each line with the corresponding line from the sconce black to black, white to white, and bobby or green to bobby . Use line connectors to secure the cables, tuck them into the box, and install the sconce according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

12. At the switch hole, remove the cables ’ jackets. Strip the ends of each of the cables roughly 1 inch and also wire the switch

Twist the white cables together and limit them with a line connector.
Cut a spare piece of bobby line, roughly 5 elevation long( this is called a cornrow).
Twist the three bare cables together and limit them with a line connector.
Bend a hook in the free end of the short bobby line( the cornrow) and place it over the green screw on the switch and strain the screw.
Attach the black line coming from the outlet( the line) to the gold screw on the bottom of the switch. Attach the black line heading to the sconce( the cargo) to the top gold screw.
Strain all the screws, tuck the cables into the switch box, and secure the switch in place. Install a switch cover plate.

13. Using the line strippers, remove 1 inch of sequestration off the new cables sticking out of the outletbox. However, attach the cables coming from the switch to the two empty screws on the outlet
If there’s only one set of cables running to the outlet.
Attach the black line to the gold screw.
Attach the white line to the white screw.
Cut a spare piece of bobby line, roughly 5 elevation long( this is called a cornrow).
Remove the bobby line from the outlet and unbend the end.
Twist the three bare bobby cables together and limit them with a line connector.
Bend a hook in the free end of the cornrow, place it over the green superstud on the switch, and strain it.

still, this process will work
If there is not an empty set of terminal screws to wire to.
Cut three lacings of line; one black, one white, and one bare. Strip the ends.
Remove one set of cables from the outlet and bend their ends straight.
Working one color at a time, twist the end of the being line, the new line from the switch, and the cornrow together. reprise until all three colors are wired.
Bend hooks in the free ends of the lacings and wire them to the outlet. line the black line to the gold screw, the white line to the white screw, and the bobby line to the green screw.

14. Neatly tuck the cables into the electrical box, reinstall the outlet and also the cover plate. Flip the swell back on to restore power to the outlet. Flip the switch on to test the sconce.

Make sure to sweep up the little bits of line and drywall dust and also step back and appreciate the redundant illumination your new sconce *-provides. However, repeat the same process to add further wall sconces around the house, If you like.
